James Whalen named to D Magazine’s 2021 Best Lawyers

This recognition is a special honor as it’s D Magazine’s exclusive and coveted list honoring the top lawyers in the DFW area as chosen by their peers. The complete list is published in the May issue of D Magazine.

Annually, D Magazine accepts nominations from attorneys of their peers whose work they have witnessed firsthand and who they rank among the very best. Nominations could include co-counsel, lawyers that they have observed in court, and opposing counsel. After the votes are tallied, a panel of eminent lawyers meet with D Magazine’s editors to evaluate and determine the Best Lawyers list. The panel’s anonymity is assured to allow the lawyers to speak freely about issues regarding their peers that would be known only to the legal community.

This recognition complements James’ stellar recognition in the legal community to include being named to the Texas Super Lawyers list 11 times in the last 15 years. He is also Board Certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Criminal Law and Criminal Appellate Law.

For over the last 25+ years, James has achieved significant success fighting for the rights and liberties of the accused in state and federal courts across the region. He has secured numerous dismissals, acquittals and reductions of charges for those facing federal and white-collar crimes, firearms and weapons offenses, and other criminal violations. James provides personalized attention to everyone he serves and has a reputation for his compassion and understanding of his clients’ situations as well as for his exemplary professionalism, irreproachable ethical standards and thorough preparedness at trial.

James graduated from The Pennsylvania State University in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts in International Politics. He then attended Southern Methodist University School of Law, where he obtained his Juris Doctor in 1995. He is admitted to practice before all U.S. District Courts in Texas as well as the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit.

A recognized authority on criminal law, James has appeared on CourtTV and other local and national news outlets, where he has offered in-depth legal commentary on a variety of topics. He is also a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, past president of the Collin County Criminal Defense Lawyer Association and current board member of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. He is also a member of the Eastern District of Texas Local Rules Committee.
